Victoria Chorale

Founded in 1988, Victoria Chorale (VC) began as the alumni choir of Victoria Junior College and later welcomed singers from Victoria School, becoming a home for generations of Victorians who love choral singing. What started as a group of young alumni singing under the baton of Mr Nelson Kwei has grown into one of Singapore’s most respected semi‑professional choirs.
Our Story and Leadership
Today, VC is an adult, semi‑professional mixed choir with about 55 members, rehearsing weekly at Victoria School. Spanning ages from late teens to seniors in their 60s, its members include nurses, teachers, engineers, and uniformed officers — all united by the shared joy of singing in a community. For many, choir was once a “compulsory” CCA that unexpectedly became a lifelong passion. Now, they choose to return week after week, not out of obligation, but because VC feels like family.

Our Journey
Since its early days, Victoria Chorale has carried Singapore’s name onto the world stage. From its first tour to Wales in 1990, VC has gone on to earn top awards in Bournemouth, England (1992), Riva del Garda, Italy (1994), Llangollen, Wales (1996), Pohlheim, Germany (1998), and Bremen, Germany (2004), as well as at the World Choir Games, where it clinched the Musica Sacra A Cappella championship in 2006. The choir was later named Grand Champion at the 2017 Manado Cantat International Choral Competition and continues to shine at international festivals, including the Tokyo International Choir Competition, where in 2024 it reached the Grand Prix finals, winning two Gold Prizes and Best Interpretation of Classical Music. A documentary chronicling their journey to Tokyo, produced by the choir and directed by alumnus Jac Min, won the Audience Choice Award at the 36th Singapore International Film Festival and was an official selection at the Cannes International Film Week.

Moments from Victoria Chorale
Giving Back
The choir is thankful to Victoria School for providing a regular rehearsal space, keeping costs lean and making it easier for alumni to continue singing together. Members offer coaching for both VS Choir and VJC Choir, be it for local performances or competitions, passing on their love for choral music to younger generations.
VC regularly gives back to the community by staging concerts in Singapore, often appearing with the VS and VJC choirs, and has built a rich performance tradition at major venues such as the Esplanade Concert Hall, Victoria Concert Hall and School of the Arts Concert Hall.

A Living Legacy
For many Victorians, Victoria Chorale is more than a choir — it is a lifelong family. Each year, generations of singers return for the Grand Reunion, a homecoming carolling session that is held every Christmas Eve. Apart from this, Victoria Chorale also gathers for their annual concert series known as “In Song”, in hopes of sharing their love for choral music with friends and family. These annual concerts and reunion events are a testament to the bonds forged in rehearsal rooms and on stage: friendships that began as school CCAs and SYF preparations have grown into a community that spans ages, vocations, and life stages. In this living legacy, every rehearsal, every concert, and every shared memory strengthens the thread that connects past, present, and future Victorians.
