HotShotz

HotShotz is more than a community football programme - it is a movement transforming lives through the power of sport.

An initiative of the Old Victorians' Association, HotShotz was the brainchild of Victorian alumnus, educator and coach Shahul Hamid Abdul Majeed, grounded in a simple yet powerful belief that every child deserves the opportunity to play, belong and succeed.

What began on the VS football field as a grassroots programme for children aged 4 to 12 has grown into a vibrant community, with football serving as a pathway to confidence, character, and lifelong friendships.

When a child is given a chance to play, they are also given the chance to dream.

OVA HotShotz is guided by the values every Victorian holds dear: discipline, respect, and service. On and off the pitch, we believe in playing fairly, supporting one another, and giving every child the chance to participate. We celebrate effort over results, character over trophies, and teamwork over individual glory — nurturing confident, resilient, and compassionate young people.

Shahul Hamid

Shahul Hamid Abdul Majeed is a dedicated educator and coach whose passion extends far beyond the classroom. As a teacher-coach at Tanjong Katong Primary School, he has guided his teams to success in numerous school competitions. Football has always been about far more than the final score. It is a classroom without walls, a place where young people learn resilience, discipline, teamwork, and the confidence to believe in themselves.

As Shahul continues to drive HotShotz, he is committed to helping every child discover their strengths, overcome challenges and realise their potential.

Every child deserves a chance. And sometimes, that chance begins through sports.

Teo Yang Song

For Yang Song, being a Victorian is a lifelong commitment to giving back to his alma mater. A proud alumnus of Victoria School, he taught there from 1997 to 2008. He volunteers as a coach at HotShotz and regularly plays in OVA Football on Sundays and in competitions. He is always ready to lend a helping hand to many of OVA’s projects.

He was the Victoria School football coach when Gavin Lee, the current Singapore national football coach, played as a central midfielder.

He believes that the strongest communities are built when those who have benefited return to uplift the next generation. His unwavering dedication reflects the enduring Victorian spirit of leadership and service. Whether on the football field or behind the scenes, Yang Song serves with humility, generosity, and purpose.

He shares his experience and inspires others to do the same; Yang Song continues to demonstrate that the greatest legacy is not measured by personal achievements, but by the lives we touch and the opportunities we create for those who follow.

Jeremy Loke

Jeremy Loke started at VS as a shy boy, but football there helped him grow into the person he is today. He developed from a quiet, obedient player into someone his coaches could trust — consistent, dependable, and willing to learn. His development eventually took him beyond the VS vice-captaincy to captaincy at VJC, and later to an officer role in the Commando Formation during his national service stint.

In 2024, Jeremy was part of the Under-23 team at Sportclub 't Zand, a Dutch football team in the Vierde Divisie, the fifth division of Dutch football.

Recruited into VS football through Direct School Admission, Jeremy quickly became part of a close-knit team that exposed him to people from diverse backgrounds and taught him to connect with a wide range of personalities. The experience shaped him into a thoughtful individual, strengthening his ability to connect with all kinds of personalities. His journey reflects the best of what VS football offers: character, confidence, and lasting friendships.

For Jeremy, VS, the support from teammates, teachers and family showed him that personal growth is rarely a solo journey. He gives back today as a volunteer coach with HotShotz, helping young children discover the same joy and belonging that shaped him.

What began as a coffeeshop conversation and a simple idea has evolved into a structured programme with growing impact.

Inspired by his wife’s work at an integrated pre-school, Shahul saw how few opportunities children with special needs had to play sport.

With guidance from his mentor Mike Wong and support from the OVA Management Council, HotShotz took shape on Saturday mornings at the VS field in 2021. It began with children of OVA members, children from needy families, and children with special needs, and soon expanded to include:

Children on the autism spectrum and with hearing challenges

Children from ComLink and Comlink+ families in Eunos, Geylang, and Marine Parade

Girls and boys who simply needed a safe, structured place to play and grow

Our heartfelt appreciation to Victoria School for its support and to the former Principal (2017 – 2023), Mr Chow Weisi, for his endorsement of the HotShotz project.

Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth, SportsSG and Football Association of Singapore, which helped us kick-start the project.

In 2024, HotShotz partnered with Tasek Sailors (a collaboration between Tasek Academy and Social Services, and Lion City Sailors) to expand the programme to under 13 and under 15,

Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Victoria School and Mr Low Chun Meng, the current Principal of VS, for their support in involving VS students to assist Tasek mentors in their academic programme. The participants go to the classrooms to revisit what they have learned in their Maths lessons, with support from students at VS. This support is part of the students’ Values-in-Action component.

HotShotz also partnered with the Ministry of Social and Family Development (Geylang and Bedok) to introduce enrichment lessons to complement what they learn in schools and ad hoc modules aimed at instilling life skills such as financial literacy.

HotShotz continued to evolve, expanding from two sessions a month to a regular multi-session programme. Numbers rose from about 20 participants to nearly 50 at its peak, with age-grouped training and even an all-girls team.

HotShotz is powered by volunteers and generosity. Coaches, many of them Victorians, give their time freely on Saturday mornings. The programme is free to attend; participants pay only a modest fee for attire, and even that is covered for families who cannot afford it.

Beyond the field, giving back means:

• Opening Victoria School’s facilities for community use
• Providing a safe, structured environment for children who might otherwise be left on the sidelines
• Inviting agencies and partners to share life skills, values, and role models with the children
• Creating opportunities for Victoria School students to serve as tutors, mentors and big brothers to the younger ones as part of their Values-In-Action programme.

Each session is more than a game. It is a chance for the Victorian family to serve the wider community and to live out the belief that sport can uplift lives.

• Parents and Guardians – Enrol your children to experience football, friendship and life skills in a safe, inclusive environment.
• Victorians and Friends – Volunteer as a coach, helper, or mentor; share your time, your expertise, or your encouragement.
• Partners and Supporters – Collaborate with us to run life-skills sessions, provide resources, or support families in need.
• Donors – Help sustain and grow the programme so that cost is never a barrier for any child.
